Facing problems importing VOB/AVI/MP4 files to Windows Movie Maker for further video editing? Here you'll get the easy and quick solution to add VOB/AVI/MP4 files into Movie Maker.

Q1:"I got a bunch of video recordings in .MP4 format that from my GoPro Hero3 and Sony PMW-EX3. Whereas, when I wanna edit those MP4 footage in Windows Movie Maker before sharing with my friends, I met problems: the Movie Maker handled with the MP4 files so slowly and some files even couldn’t be recognized. I couldn’t edit my videos smoothly."

Windows Media Player 11 recognizes and plays MPEG-4 just fine but WMM doesn’t. This problem occurs because MP4 is incompatible with Windows Movie Maker.

Q2:"According to what I read, this version of Windows Movie Maker SHOULD import .vob files unlike previous earlier versions. The problem is that when I import, there is no sound and a 870MB file only shows 3 or 4 seconds of video. Obviously something's up."

VOB is basically a MPEG-2 video file which is stored in Video_TS folder in a DVD. As this kind of video file usually contains one or several audio tracks and subtitle tracks that are multiplexed together into one stream form, it is not so easy to playback or edit.

Q3:" I’m new to making videos, I’m trying to make one, but Windows Movie Maker won’t let me import an AVI video! This is exactly what it says:
‘blahblahblah.avi can't be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on the computer. If you've already downloaded and installed the codec, please close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then import the file again’. "

In fact, Windows Movie Maker can support several AVI formats, like Motion JPEG AVI and DV-AVI. In other words, some AVI videos encoded by other codecs are not so compatible with Windows Movie Maker.

Okay, WMM supports .WMV, .asf, .AVI, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpv2, and .wm codecs and you can find that VOB, AVI , MP4 are not in the list. We searched the VOB/AVI/MP4 and Windows Movie Makeron Google, and found the other users are also facing the importing problems.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to fix the issue. The easy workaround is to change VOB/AVI/MP4 to Windows Movie Maker acceptable file format like WMV before importing. Actually, it’s not as difficult as you imagine. What you need is a just a common video converter like Brorsoft Video Converter.
