Lossless (3D) Blu-ray to MKV Rip and Backup

This tutorial will show you the best way to lossless backup your (3D) Blu-ray collection on Windows/Mac so that you can keep Blu-ray discs from scratching, or manage your movies in a more convenient way.

Assuming a backup rip from a brand new 3D blu-ray movie, using lossless codecs would mean that the most important questions at hand would be: Which lossless codec is widely used and compatible?

* Read Blu-ray Tips | DVD Bakcup Tips | Why choose MKV

Since the original Blu-ray movie in .m2ts format and the best way to get 1:1 copy of original BD movie is to copy the entire disc into .m2ts format, but in this way you would also get exactly same file size as original one, at least 20GB, this way takes too much hard disk space. If you want to backup Blu-ray or 3D Blu-ray in 1:1 copy, click the link to figure out.

According to my own experience, I prefer backing up BD/DVD disc to mkv format using ByteCopy (Read Review) because it not only copies movie to mkv without quality loss, the conversion process is within 20 minutes, very efficient. Moreover, the Best Blu-ray ripping program will will help us retaining Multi-subtitle and multi-audio tracks. Below is a guide for you.

Step 1. Free download and install the Blu-ray(3D) to MKV converter on your PC. If you use Mac OS X computer, you need to use Bytecopy for Mac.

Step 2. Launch it and import your Blu-ray or 3D Blu-ray movie file into it. You are allowed to import Blu-ray/DVD disc, Blu-ray/DVD ISO image, DVD IFO image, Blu-ray/DVD folder etc.

Step 3. Choose MKV format as output, here "Format > Multi-track Video > Lossless/encoded Multi-track MKV (*.mkv)" is recomended for you.

Note: There is a "Settings" option, which allows you to make adjustments on your audio, video, subtitles. It's worth mentioning that, by default, all audio & subtitles tracks in a source file are checked to be saved in the MKV container, if there are some tracks you don’t like, you can click Settings button and go to Multi-task Settings window to uncheck and remove them under Audio tab and Subtitle tab. meanwhile, the program also allows you to add srt, ass and ssa subtitles by yourself.

Step 4. Click on "Convert" to start ripping Blu-ray to MKV with quality lossless.

The process will take some time, but won't too long, about 15 minutes. When it's done, you can click on "Open" to find converted MKV file.

Additional Tips:

If you know little about how to set the bitrate of your video file, just refer to the list

18000kpbs- excellent HD video quality close to Blu-ray standard
12000kbps- great HD video quality for watching on HDTV
5000-9800kbps- DVD video quality
2000-4000kbps- video for portable media players (e.g. Galaxy Tab, Archos 101, Xoom etc)
512kbps- video for regular mobile phones
